"Excuse me, sir." Chun approached the officer in the front desk. "Yes? How can I help you?" the uniformed police asked. "I would like to report a missing person." Chun pulled Cammy by his side. "Give me her name, date and place where you found her, any recent photo if you have, and the contact person in case someone claims to be her relative." the police detailed all. "Err... she have short term memory loss so temporarily we named her Ella. I found her within the vicinity of my property six days ago. She's wearing bulletproof vest and police uniform. I don't have her recent photo and here is my card." Chun handed it to the officer. "Hmmm. Dr. Wu Chun. Haola, I think she's a police officer or agent. It's much easier for her family to find her. We'll give you a call if there's any progress." the police wrote down all the information. Cammy and Chun went back to the island. "Your place is magnificent! I like it here. Are you living alone?" Cammy asked. "You can say that." Chun answered as he managed to dock the speed boat. "But I have the housekeeper and her family living at the back of my house. They're the one who takes care of the house and me. They're like my family." he added. They walked through the wind sand beach. "Where is your wife and kids? And parents too?" Cammy asked again while playing the sand in her feet. "I'm not yet married. My parents died when I was in highschool." Chun answered. "Ohh! Dui bu qi la." Cammy apologized. "Meiguan xi. Don't worry about it. Anyway, if you returned to your place, you can visit me here anytime you want." he said. "Really? I'll definitely do that! I love it here!" Cammy smiled. ########################################################### "Any news?" agent Calvin asked officer Jiro when he entered the headquarters. "I got one!" Maddy ran towards them. Walking behind is uncle Jim. "We received an information from the town of Sechuan. They reported a missing person named Ella but it perfectly describes Cammy. We had to go there now." Maddy said excitedly. "Alright! I told you she's still alive!" officer Jiro exclaimed. "Thank God!" agent Calvin finally smiled. "Sir, we will go there to bring back Cammy. Stay here and wait for us." he added. "Ok, then. Jia you!" uncle Jim said. They rode the car and went off to the town of Sechuan. ########################################################### "Uncle, I found her. And she can't remember anything." the mysterious mask guy said. "Good.Take her immediately. The family will come any minute. I can't wait to take my hands on her. She killed my daughter!" the druglord said in gritted teeth. The mask guy nodded and walked away. ########################################################### "Ella! Lunch is ready!" Chun called from the dining area. "I felt weird if you calling me Ella. Who's Ella by the way?" Cammy sits with Chun at the dining table. Chun gave her a blank expression. "My ex-fiancee." he said. Cammy covered her mouth. "Dui bu qi la. Me and my big mouth again." she said. "She left me to be with another guy. I hate her not you. Anyway, I'm over it now so don't worry. No hard feelings at all." Chun explained. "Whew! I thought you hated me because your obliged to take care of me and I thought you hated me that's why you named me after her. Am I making any sense?" Cammy asked. "Wahahaha!" Chun just laughed at what she said. The food came and they enjoyed their meal. After they finished eating, Chun's phone rang. "Wei?" he answered. "Dr. Wu Chun? This is officer Teng from District 5 police department of Sechuan. Someone came and told that he's a relative of the girl you reported. He said her name was Cameron Yang and she's a police officer from Taiwan. He's waiting here at the station." the police informed him. "Alright. We'll be there shortly." Chun closed the phone. "We have to go back. Your family is there." Chun gave Cammy a smile. They rode the boat back to Sechuan. They saw a tall, well built man waiting impatiently at the station. He quickly got up when he saw Cammy and Chun approaching. "Thank you for taking care of her. I'm here to bring her back home." the guy said to Chun. "Do you have any papers and ID's to prove?" Chun asked the guy. "Here." he handed all the documents. Chun looked at all of it. Then he turned at Cammy. "Did you recognized him?" Cammy looked intensely at the guy. "He seemed so familiar. I think I saw him before." cammy said. "I got a picture of us in our school. Take a look," he handed the photo to her. Cammy looked at it. It was them standing outside the school. "Well?" the guy asked. Cammy shrugged her shoulder. "Are we done? We need to catch our flight. We're going back to Taiwan today." the guy said. "Ok. Cammy right? Take care huh? Here are your prescriptions and medicines. Drink all of it so your wound will heal quickly. Don't forget to visit me. Zaijian!" Chun waved at her. Cammy felt sadness in her heart. Somehow, she felt she don't want to go. And she don't know why. Chun went to his boat after he saw the car disappeared. Before he started it, two men and a lady approached him. "Excuse me! Are you the person who reported a missing lady?" Maddy asked. "Huh? Cammy?" Chun was surprised seeing her. "No. She's her sister. Where is she?" agent Calvin asked. "Her relative took her already." Chun said.

"Help! Please help me!" she shouted. They covered her and quickly put a bulletproof vest then ran towards agent Calvin and officer Jiro. Maddy and officer Jiro hugged tightly. "I'm so sorry sweetheart. I promise I would never leave you again." officer Jiro kissed Maddy all over her face. "It's ok. I'm fine. Don't blame yourself." Maddy said. "Have you seen Cammy?" agent Calvin asked with a worried face. Before Maddy could answer, one Hongkong Police approached them. "Sir, one witness saw a moving van ran towards the end of the port loaded with two women and driver. I think one of the passenger is officer Cameron." he informed agent Calvin. "Cmon! Let's go!" agent Calvin commanded his men. "Wait here Maddy," officer Jiro said. He and agent Calvin left Maddy with uncle Jim to the other police officers. As they moved closer to the end of the port, agent Calvin's heart is beating so fast. There are some people gathered around the area and they questioned them. "Have you seen a white van passed by?" agent Calvin asked. The old woman pointed at the ocean. "It went straight ahead." she told them. "Oh no!" officer Jiro called the headquarters. "Send paramedics and rescue team immediately. We got a van fell off the end of the ocean." he added. Agent Calvin started to panic. "This can't be happening!" "Ei! You need to calm down. We will find her. Cmon! The search and rescue team will be here any minute." officer Jiro tapped his shoulder. ########################################################### Cammy kept blinking her eyes. "Where am I?" she said. Her eyes roam around the place. "Am I dead already?" she kept asking herself. Suddenly, the door opened, "You're awake," a man came with tray of food in his hand. "How are you feelin?" he asked. "Quite ok." she answered. "I'm Chun. And you are?" he asked again. "I'm....." Cammy tried to remember her name. Damn! Why she can't remember? Cammy thought. "I don't know my name," she told him. "Uh oh! That's a problem." Chun said and put down the tray beside her. "Here, have a bite. You've been unconscious for five days." he added. "How did you...?" Cammy asked in between bites. "I found you floating by the sea. You had a gunshot in your chest. But don't worry, it's not serious. The vest protected you." Chun explained. "Where am I?" she asked again and touched the wound on her chest. "You're in my island property. 120 kilometres away from the city. Beside the gunshot wound, you're suffering from a head injury resulting to a short term memory loss. It's up to you to regain it back." Chun told her checking her vital signs. "You're a doctor?" Cammy asked. I'm a surgeon. I can't find any identification card from you. We need to think a temporary name." he said. "From the clothes your wearing before, I think you're an agent or police officer." he showed her uniform. Cammy automatically covered herself. "You changed my clothes?!" she almost shouted. "Wahahaha! Don't be afraid. I didn't see anything. My housekeeper changed it for you." Chun flashed his smile. Cammy was mesmerized. Suddenly, a flash of memory came into her mind. She saw a man with the same smile who looked very familiar but she can't remember. Cammy held her head. She felt a slight pain. "Wei! Are you ok? Do you remember anything?" Chun held her shoulder worried. "I recognized a man but I can't remember who he is." she said frustratedly. "Don't push yourself. It will come, don't worry. Anyway, I'll leave you for a while. I think you're ok. I'll be back after four hours." Chun stood up and walk through the door. "Where are you going?" Cammy asked. "I'm going to the hospital. I won't take long." he closed the door. ########################################################### Agent Calvin was sitting behind the bar. He's been drinking for five straight days. Officer Jiro and Maddy were so worried about him. When they did the rescue search a few days back, they found two bodies only. The driver and Genie. Agent Calvin was so shocked. He never thought that Genie could do this kind of thing. Later they found out that she is the only daughter of the druglord they're targeting. The mask man is the step son and he escaped quickly. "Cal, stop doing this to yourself. Cammy wouldn't want you to be like this," Maddy told him taking the glass out of his hand. "We shouldn't separated. I should let her stay by my side. None of this would happen." tears fell down from his eyes. "Haola, haola. Take a rest. We'll talk tomorrow." officer Jiro carried agent Calvin to his room. "He's very miserable right now. I think I should stay with him for a while." officer Jiro told Maddy. "Ok. I'll go to uncle for the latest news." she kissed him before she left. Inside the room, agent Calvin saw the shirt Cammy gave to him. He felt more sad and lonely. "I shouldn't let you go, Cammy. I didn't had a chance to say that I like you. I miss you so much. I'm so sorry," he hugged the shirt tightly and weeping silently. Officer Jiro came inside. "Wei! Stop torturing yourself. We know deep in our hearts, Cammy is still alive. We haven't found the body, right? Trust your instincts. We will find her very soon." officer Jiro gave an encouraging words. "Right. I must regain myself. I'm sorry if I've been pain in the ass these past days." agent Calvin apologized to officer Jiro. "Meiguan xi. We're in this together. Me and Maddy will stay by your side." officer Jiro assured him.Chapter 15
Maddy found the exit and ran as fast as she can. She saw two uniformed officers.

Good thing, she's wearing a hooded shirt so Jiro can't see her face. In split second, Rainie ran as fast as she can then made a quick turn around the corner. "Hey!" Jiro followed her but didn't catch up. When he returned, he saw a small gift down at the doorstep. Jiro picked up and read the card. "I know I'm one day late but still... Happy Birthday" the card said. Jiro smiled. "You never seize to amazed me, Larisa." he went inside the house and locked the door. Rainie checked if Jiro's still outside. He's gone already. She quickly ran toward Danson's car. Rainie opened the door and sat on the front seat. Then, Aaron and Danson burst into laughter. "What are you laughing at?" Rainie pouted. Danson can't utter a word while Aaron almost rolled over in the back seat. "You can join the track and field national team!" Aaron finally managed to talk. "He almost caught me! Thanks to my hooded shirt!" Rainie kissed her shirt. "Why are you hiding anyway?" Aaron calmed down wiping his tears. "They met on the wrong foot." Danson answered. Rainie told him what happened in the afternoon. "Ohh. So that's how it is. Well, you should prepare yourself. Sooner or later, you will have to face him. Too bad he's taken already. Poor RenRen!" Aaron teased her and tapped her back. "Ha! Ha!" Rainie answered sarcastically. ########################################################### Jiro sat on the dining table and opened the gift. It's a cute candy dispenser. He read the note sticked on it. "So you'll not messed up your gummies..." Jiro laughed. "What are you giggling about there?" GuiGui came munching her chips. He showed the dispenser. "Whoah! Hao ke ai!" she took it from Jiro's hand. "Who gave this to you?" GuiGui asked. "I saw it on our doorstep. Maybe it's from Larisa." Jiro answered. "Pai tuo! Larisa? She doesn't have sweet bone in her body," she smirked. "Well I saw someone passed by our house. I don't know, maybe I'm just seeing things." Jiro said randomly. "Have you eaten your dinner? Why are you late? I thought you finished work at 5pm?" he added. "Question 1, yes. Question 2, I went out. Question 3, yes again. Anything else?" GuiGui answered. "Where did you go? Who's with you? Are you dating someone?" Jiro started to interrogate. "Bu San Mall. Aaron, Rainie and my Danson. I might date very soon!" GuiGui giggled. The word that clinged to Jiro's mind was the name Rainie. "She's here?" he said excitedly. "Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you. They came back yesterday. They're staying here for good." GuiGui informed him. "Well... that's great!" he hide his excitement. "Aren't you glad they're here?" she looked straight into Jiro's eyes. "I'm glad. Anyway, go to bed. And stop eating junk foods. You're getting fat already." he moved his eyes away from his sister. They went to their respective rooms having different thoughts. Jiro was thinking about Rainie. "They came back. She came back." he said to himself. Then a small voice talked back in his mind. "You have fiancee already. stop dreaming. You can't break up with Larisa just because Rainie came back. Forget about her." He thought about it for a few minutes then, "Yeah. I'm getting married sooner. I must be crazy thinking about her." Jiro shook his head for several times and laid his tired body in the bed. Meanwhile, GuiGui opened the gift that Aaron gave. IT's a big Stitch plush doll. She hugged it tightly. "You haven't forgotten my favorite toy!" she smiled very wide. So wide that almost ripped her mouth open. "Ouch!" she touched her mouth. GuiGui dialled Aaron's number. "Wei?" Aaron answered lazily. "Thanks for the gift." she said. Aaron glanced at his watch. "You called me at 2am just to thank me? Why not tell me tomorrow GuiGui!" he protested. "Dui bu qi. I'm just happy that I can't wait tomorrow to tell you. You still remember my favorite toy." GuiGui said. "Of course! How can I forget? You almost cried a river for that toy back then. Eh! Don't tell me you're starting to fall for my charms? Sorry to disappoint you but I don't mixed business with pleasure, hao ba?" Aaron teased her. "Go back to sleep!" she slammed the phone. He's still the sweet Aaron she have known. But he kept hiding it through his flirtatious act. GuiGui closed the lights and went to bed with Stitch on her side. ########################################################### Rainie and Danson prepared early morning for the grand opening of their shop. They planned five different kinds of cakes to prepare. Danson finished baking and now it's Rainie's turn to decorate it. Her favorite, Tiramisu, a blend of cocoa, mocha and coffee covered with whipped cream and sprinkled with cocoa bits is the last one she's designing. "I'm almost done!" Rainie whispered to herself. "I'll call your Mom and Aaron to get ready." Danson said while dialling their house number. "Yes! I'm finished!" She said and look at all the cakes with satisfaction. "You're the best designer ever!" Danson praised he artwork. "Thank you. Thank you." GuiGui playfully bows as if she have audiences watching her. "Haola. Let's change very quickly. They're all gonna arrive any minute." They ran to the locker room to change. Few minutes later, Rainie's family and all the invited guests arrived one by one. The last to arrived were Jiro, GuiGui, Larisa and a bunch of people. Rainie took a deep breath. "Here they come!" Danson whispered to her. "congrats Danson!" Jiro approached Danson and shook his hands. "Congrats!" Larisa offered her hand first. "Thank you guys for coming. Anyway, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce my partner, the person who's behind these very elegant cakes, the best cake designer so far, Ms. Yang Chen Lin." Danson introduced her. Rainie turned around. "Nice to meet you." she said in awkward voice. "YOU?!" Jiro exclaimed in surprise.

I hate working here without Dad around, GuiGui thought. Come to think of it, I hated working here when he was around. She sighed. At least the job paid her enough for some new clothes and an occasional CD. After four days Mr. Wu was still in the intensive care of Taipei General Hospital, but the doctors were encouraged by his progress. GuiGui glanced up at the clock. Twenty to seven, nearly closing time. If she hurried, she'd be able to see her dad at the hospital before the visiting hours ended at seven-thirty. She let her eyes roam slowly over the empty coffee shop. It was kind of scary being alone in there. What if those three creeps came back? "Hey--- Ernie?" she called, suddenly frightened. Ernie was big and very tough looking. He'd protect her if there was any trouble. But where was he? "Ernie?" No reply. He must still be back in the alley, she realized. The big refrigerator clicked on loudly, startled her. She decided to think about Wang Zi, the new guy at school to help pass the time. So far, neither she or Wang Zi, had managed to get a real conversation going. GuiGui had rehearsed and rehearsed what she was going to say to him. She had imagined countless conversations, playing both parts in her mind. In her mind their conversations were easy and fun. They kidded each other and laughed at each other's jokes. But when she was actually sitting beside him in the homeroom in the morning, she panicked. Or Mr. Tang had a full page of announcements to read. Or Wang Zi was busily writing in a notebook. Or it just didn't seem to be the right time. He had smiled at her several times, and even said good morning twice and asked how she was doing. But then he returned to his notebook or a book he was reading. He's never going to ask me out, GuiGui thought frustratedly. Despite this slow start to their relationship, she found herself thinking about him a lot. Even while practicing the saxophone, she sometimes pictured his shy smile, his dark, soulful eyes. She was imagining a conversation with him when the door swung open and two tough teenagers came in, their eyes nervously surveying the empty restaurant. One of them was big and wide, with shaved head. The other was lean with an unpleasant grin on his face. Both were wearing faded jeans and despite the autumn cold only t-shirts with the name of heavy metal group printed in the front. Gripped with sudden fear, GuiGui stepped back from the counter, edging her way to the kitchen. "Ernie?" she called in a frightened whisper. No reply. I can't believe we're being robbed again, she thought, her back against the wall, her eyes searching the two guys, trying to determine of they were carrying weapons. The cash register contained less than fifty dollars, she knew. They're not going to hurt me for that amount of money, are they? She decided she'd give them the money, hand it over without a protest. Once again she pictured her father arguing with the three tough guys just day before, trying to fend them off trying to block their way to the cash register. If he hadn't resisted, if he hadn't tried to fight them, if he hadn't tried to block their wayto the cash register, they probably wouldn't have hit him, GuiGui told herself. I'm not going to be brave, GuiGui decided. I'm going to be as cooperative as I can. Having made certain that the coffee shop was deserted, the two young men stepped up to the cash register. "You all alone here?" the lean one asked GuiGui. "No" GuiGui said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'm not alone." The two creeps exchanged glances and laughed. "Were just about to close up now," GuiGui said, her voice was trembling despite her determination not to sound frightened. she raised her eyes to the clock. Ten to seven. "Just about?" the skinny one asked. They laughed again. "What can I get you?" GuiGui asked. "You're kind of cute in a way," the big one said, scratching his head. His partner's grin grew wider. "Really. We're closing now," GuiGui said feeling her throat tighten. Her mouth felt dry. "Yeah. You're the cutest thing in here," the big one said, resting his hands on the counter just a few inches to the cash register. He stared into her eyes, waiting for her to react. "What do you want?" GuiGui asked, more of a plea than a question. "Well..." the big one started. Then he and his partner exchanged glances and giggled again. GuiGui's heart thudded in her chest. If they're going to rob me, why don't they just do it and get it over with? she thought impatiently. "Well, what do we want?" the big one asked, smirking at GuiGui. "Good question," his partner added. "What time did you say you get off work?" the big one asked, leaning over the counter, his face close to GuiGui's. Her terror choked her. What are they going to do? Aren't they going to rob the store and leave? Why are they asking me this questions? Why are they grinning at me like that? "when do you get off?" the big one repeated. GuiGui stared up at the clock. She opened her mouth to say something, to tell them to leave, to get out, to stop frightening her. Before she could utter a word, the door swung open and another boy stepped into the restaurant. He walked quickly up the narrow aisle beside the counter his hands on his sides. It took GuiGui a minute to recognized him. She had seen him only once before. "YaLun!" she cried. Then she hesitated. Is YaLun with them? she wondered. No. The two toughs reacted with surprise as YaLun made his way into the restaurant. He stopped at the end of the counter and stared back at them, his powerful-looking arms tensed, his hands at his sides, his dark eyes staring from one to the other. "You still open?" YaLun asked GuiGui. "Just closing," GuiGui replied softly. She didn't move. "Can I get a cup of coffee?" YaLun asked, staring at the two toughs. "Okay," GuiGui said. She stepped towards the coffee machine. "Later," th big guy said. He and his partner exchanged glances. GuiGui noticed that the smile had finally faded from the lean one's face. "Yeah. Later," the lean one said, trying to make the words sound scary. They turned and slowly past YaLun and out the restaurant. GuiGui didn't move until the door had closed behind them. She made a loud sigh of relief and collapsed against the counter as she watched them walk away. "Were they holding you up?" YaLun asked. He had taken a seat on the counter stoll at the far end. "Yes. I mean, I don't know. I'm not sure," GuiGui said shakily. Holding the coffee pot over the white china cup, she struggled to keep her hand steady as the coffee splashed into the cup. When she set the cup down in front of him on the counter, she noticed him studying her with his dark eyes his expression serious and thoughtful. She slid a pitcher of milk towards him. "They were acting real toug. I don't know what they were going to do. Rob me, I guess." She pulled off the apron and bundled it up. He took a sip of the coffee, black, his eyes still on her. She tossed the apron into the corner. "They seemed to be afraid of you," she said, smiling uneasily. "They should be," YaLun replied. He stared down at the coffee cup. What does he mean by that? GuiGui wondered. Is he making a joke? Or is he serious? His expression didn't reveal an answer. He took another sip of coffee. "Dangerous around here," he said still avoiding her eyes. What was he trying to say? Was he just making a comment? Or was he trying to warn her? GuiGui heard scraping sounds from the kitchen. She turned to see Ernie, the fry cook, cleaning off the grill, a stub of cigarette stuck between his teeth. "Time to knock off?" he called out to her. "Yeah. I'll close up." GuiGui told him. YaLun took a long sip of coffee. GuiGui waited for him to say something, but he stayed silent. She wanted to say something to him, to thank him for saving her from the two toughs, to keep the conversation going. But her shyness interfered. She couldn't think of anything to say. Is he going to ask me out again? she wondered. If he does, will I say yes? She realized she was frightened of him and drawn to him at the same time. Why can't I think of anything to say? Why can't I just say something? Why is it so easy for other girls, girls like Hebe, and so hard for me? These questions flashed through her mind as she stared at him from behind the counter, her eyes studying his dark, serious face. "Need a refill?" she asked, clearing her throat first. He shook his head. "No. Thanks." Ernie came out of the kitchen. "See you tomorrow," he said giving her a little nod, then turning his eyes on YaLun. "Okay. Bye," GuiGui said and watched Ernie go out the door. I'm alone with YaLun now she realized. The thought sent a small, cold shiver down her back. YaLun took a final sip of the coffee, pushed the cup away and dropped a dollar onto the counter. Is he going to say something? GuiGui wondered. Is he going to ask me out again? I'll say yes, YaLun, she thought, trying to send brain waves from her mind to his. I'll say yes. he pushed himself up. Standing, he flashed her a shy smile. "Thanks." "Welcome," she said, reaching for the cup. "See you," he said. His sneakers moved silently over the floor. He left without looking back. The door closed quietly behind him. GuiGui's shoulders slumped forward. She sighed, disappointed, and dropped the coffee cup into the dirty dish tray. Her mind spinned. She felt terribly mixed up. As she made one final inspection, turning out the lights as she went, she realized she was disappointed. And relieved. A few minutes later she stepped outside into a cold clear night. She carefully locked the front door and pulled the metal grate across it, as she had seen her father do. Then she hurried to the hospital to see how he was doing. A few blocks from the coffee shop, YaLun pulled open the door to his third-floor walkup apartment and stepped into the living room without turning on any lights. Closing the door left him in darkness. Pacing the small, hot room, he slammed a fist repeatedly into his open palm. After a few minutes he uttered an angry cry, continuing to pace like an animal. Why didn't I ask her out? he asked himself. Why didn't I do it? I wanted to. I planned it. Why did I just sit there like a jerk, sipping that bitter coffee? We were all alone. All alone. Why did I blow this opportunity? What's wrong with me? Furious at himself, he removed the phone off the table, pulled the cord out of the wall, and throw the phone with all his might against the window. The glass shattered noisily. But he couldn't hear it over the angry roar in his brain.Chapter 7
Tough Guys...Again?!
GuiGui mopped the counter half-heartedly with a wet cloth. She glanced through the open window into the kitchen. No one there. Ernie, the tattoed fry cook, must have stepped out back for a smoke.

He liked cold weather. He like the sharpness of the wind that cut right through him. He liked the heaviness of it in his nostrils and against his forehead. The morning sun was still low over the trees. Droplets of cold water cling to his straight brown hair. The wind past him, then calmed. The river was wider than he had imagined. He liked the cold, trickling sound it made as it moved past. Standing in the tall grass, he stared motionless into the bubbling brown waters for a long time, his hands were inside his jeans pockets. The wind swirled and returned to blow the grass. It felt good. Good against his face too. His face was burning, burning. He needed the wind to cool it. The river was called Niba Chuan. That's what the sign had said. What did it mean? Muddy river? He chuckled to himself. Across the river, wooded cliffs rose. He could see a road winding up them to the top. River Road it was called. He had read his map, studied it carefully. He pulled off the wool cap and put it into his jacket pocket. It was keeping him warm. He wanted to feel cold. Especially his face. His face always felt so hot, as if he were under a burning sun, as if he were sunburned. The air was so cold, so sharp. But still it didn't cool his face. He started walking again through the tall grass, his boots making squishing sounds in the soft ground. Taipei wasn't a bad town, he decided. He'd made a good choice. It was a pretty town, for the most part. And the river was nice. He liked looking at the big houses in Bei Shanqiu with their big, clean front yards, their tall and perfectly trimmed grasses. Of course, he could never fit in there. He didn't belong, and he knew it. He liked the Old Village too, a more friendly part of Taipei, more comfortable, more familiar. Not a bad town, he thought, picking up a large, flat pebble from near the shore and trying to skip it across the flowing water. It sank out of sight. Of course, there were girls in this town who needed to die. Girls just like you, Mom, he thought, putting his hands back into his pockets. He felt the anger begin again. It always started in his stomach, then worked it's way up his back until his neck muscles tightened. Then his head started to beat, beat with pain, beat from the anger. And his face felt so hot, so burning hot. The cold, trickling water, the cool, gusting wind, the damp, swaying grass at his feet--- none of it help. None of it could stop the anger once it started. And once he started thinking about his mother, the anger always came. Some girls need to die, Mom. Just like you. He had felt the anger for so many years. Since he was four. Since his parents divorced. Since his mother went away and took his big sister to live with her. Since he was left with his father. You knew what you were doing, Mom, he thought, taking another stone into the river, with all his might, with all his anger. You knew what you were doing. You knew that Dad got drunk every night. You knew that Dad beat me when he got drunk. But still you took my sister and ran. You left me behind. You left me with--- him. Every night I thought of you, Mom. Every beating, I thought of you. I thought only of you. And of my revenge. I'm going to pay you back, Mom. I've already started to pay you back. In every town I visit. If only I could find you. If only I knew where you lived. A white kitten suddenly appeared at the edge of the trees. It stared across the grass at him with bold, black eyes. "Here, kitty," he called, bending down and motioning with his hands. "Here, kitty, kitty." The kitten stared back, tilted it's head, but didn't move. Sometimes I get my revenge, Mom, he thought, squatting down, motioning to the white kitten. And it makes me feel better. It makes me feel better to kill. For a while. "Here, kitty, kitty." he made clicking noises with his tongue and teeth. "Come here, kitty." It has to be the right girl, Mom. It can't be any girl. It has to be the right girl. And I've found the right girl here in Taipei. She's just like you, Mom. At least that's how I remember you. I don't have a picture of you. You never sent me a picture. Or a letter. You just left me behind to be beaten every night. But I think she looks like you. She's kinda chubby. She's not real pretty, but she's okay. And she seems so shy. So perfectly shy. She's right, Mom. I think she's just right. When the anger comes again, I think she'll do fine. "Here, kitty, kitty," he called. The kitten took a small step toward him mewing softly. Then another step. Then another, staring at him, studying him.
