Chapter 14
Starry Night
Aaron’s POVIt was late at night, but I still couldn’t sleep. Whenever I closed my eyes, I would see Hebe and Jiro. I stood up and walked to Jiro’s room.
Jiro wasn’t in his room. A feeling of cold and emptiness filled me. I sat down on his bed, my mind full of images of us together. Since young, we were friends. Our families and Selina’s often cooperated in business dealings, and so we often saw each other, and became quick friends. It was all going fine.
Until she came.
Hebe.
I never really noticed how lonely I was, till I met Hebe.
She seemed to radiate with happiness and life. She made the dullest of things seem lively and she always made me smile.
But it was Hebe who threw all the happiness of friendship I had into chaos. She did it.
I looked around the room. On the bedside was a photograph of two little boys and a chubby girl. Jiro, me and Selina. I smiled. I noticed an envelope lying next to the photograph. Curious, I opened it up.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Photos of Jiro and Hebe fell from the envelope, littering the floor. Is stood there in a daze, trying to convince myself that I was still dreaming. Anger filled my head as my eyes wandered across the photos.
Did they… they wouldn’t…
“Jiro… Jiro are you there?” I heard a voice call softly from outside the door. The door slowly swung open and there stood Hebe.
“Aaron?” Her eyes widened when she saw the photos scattered on the floor.
“Looking for Jiro?” I said icily. “Sorry to disappoint.”
“No! Aaron I don’t mean that…” Hebe said, trying to explain.
“Stay away from me.” I said, walking to the door.
I paused at the door. Yes. She’s the one who spoilt everything. She ruined everything.
And I walked away.

Jiro’s POV
Now Aaron’s mad at me, Selina’s avoiding me and there’s someone trying to blackmail me.
Great.
I was in my car, parked outside the beach, looking up into the starry night.
Aaron, Selina and I used to come here often when we were kids.
FLASHBACK:
“Wahh! Aaron! Look at the stars!” Selina shouted, smiling.
Aaron beamed.
A little boy that had messy brown hair and a crooked smile ran up to them. That’s me.
“Let’s play!”
“Playing is for BABIES.” Aaron said, acting proud.
“It’s nice here.” Selina said, smiling at the two boys.
Aaron scrunched up his face, thinking. After a while, he spoke. “I’ve decided. This will be our secret meeting place. Whenever we want to meet, we will meet here.”
“Okay!” Selina said, smiling.
I grinned.
Every once in a while, we would meet up here.
But slowly, year after year, we grew up.
We forgot.
I looked up into the starry sky, wondering if I was the only one who still remembered.

No POV
Aaron strolled along the beach, looking up into the night sky. It’s been such a long time since he’s been here.
Jiro looked out of his car window and saw Aaron.
…What’s he doing here?
Jiro ran out of his car, towards Aaron, the sand rippling under his feet.
Jiro. Aaron froze.
“Aaron. We have to talk.” Jiro said calmly.
“I saw the photos.”
He saw the photos? The ones of Hebe and me? That means… he was talking about Hebe, not Selina. It all hit me at once. I laughed.
Aaron gripped Jiro’s shirt with one hand. “Are you laughing?”
Jiro’s face became serious. “Aaron, would I do such a thing? Even if you don’t trust me, trust Hebe.”
Trust Hebe…
Jiro continued, “She isn’t that sort of girl.”
“Hebe was drunk, and she didn’t know what she was doing. Things happened and someone took pictures of us. I think that they want to blackmail my family.”
Aaron’s mind suddenly became clear. How could he be so stupid?
“Jiro… I’m sorry.” Aaron said, forcing the words out. “For hitting you.”
“It’s okay.” Jiro said, smiling.
Aaron looked up into the starry sky and Jiro followed his best friend’s gaze.
He was sure that Aaron remembered.
