Chapter 10
A date with a friend
Hebe’s POVJiro brought me to a high class restaurant. It looked… really high class. It made me wish that I had worn a more formal dress.
Jiro noticed me pulling at my dress, laughed and said, “Don’t worry, you look fine.”
“You should talk; look at what you’re wearing.” I shot back.
Jiro looked down at his t-shirt and jeans. In a room full of people in tuxedos and gowns, we stood out. Everyone was staring at us.
“Hey.” He held my hand, reassuring me. “It’s okay. No one’s going to laugh at you.”
“How many people?” the waiter asked.
“Table for two.” Jiro said.
“This way, please.” The waiter led us to our seats.
“The usual, Master Wang?” The waiter asked.
“Yes. And bring us red wine, please.” Jiro said, smiling.
I stared at him with my mouth wide open. …What?
People around us started to look up from their plates and stare.
“Is that his girlfriend?”
People started to chatter quietly.
“Would you care to explain this?” I asked through gritted teeth. “Master Wang?”
“My parents own this restaurant.” Jiro said.
My eyes widened. “Really?” wow. “That means that you’ll take over the business when you grow up, right?”
“…I don’t want to. I want to go on adventures, explore the world.” Jiro had a far-away look on his face. “But my parents want me to get a wife and take over the business.” He frowned.
“Well, you won’t know that your dreams won’t come true unless you try.” I said, hoping that didn’t sound too cliché.
“You’re right!” He held my hands in his and looked into my eyes. “I’m going to try. No. I’m not just going to try. I going to do it.”
Meanwhile, Aaron paced around the room while Selina sat on his bed. She was quietly thinking about the day she kissed Jiro. Were they going to pretend that nothing had happened?
Aaron had other problems to deal with. Like the weird feeling he’s starting to have around Hebe.
Downstairs, Wu Chun had crept up to steal something to eat from the fridge. He found someone there already.
“Want some supper?” Asked Ella. “I can make you another sandwich.”
Wu Chun sat down, smiling. He thought to himself, she’s different.
No. Wu Chun thought again. She’s special.
And over with Hebe and Jiro, they were chatting happily over dinner, as if they’ve known each other a lifetime.
They didn’t notice the blinking light from the camera hidden behind the pillar not far from them.
It was already 10 pm and they still weren’t back. I sat down on the sofa, Hebe’s eyes appearing before me.
I cast the thought away quickly.
Listen, Aaron. You hate her. And all of a sudden you’re joking and laughing with her. What’s with you? You’re just supposed to play with her, remember?
I hit myself on the head.
Aaron, you’re going crazy.
I started to feel dizzy. I couldn’t think properly. My legs started to feel weak.
“Hebe?” I heard someone call from behind me. “I told you not to drink too much of the red wine. “It’s very strong.”
I turned around groggily and saw a guy. He was blurry and I couldn’t really see him.
“No! Jiro. Remember?” He said.
My mind didn’t really register his words.
“Aaron, bring me home. I want to sleep.”
“Why are you laughing?Stop laughing!” I suddenly felt tired, so I fell forwards. He caught me in his arms. I could have sworn that I saw flashing lights in the bushes behind him. I must be dreaming.
Without thinking, I leant forward and kissed the guy.
I stayed there for a few seconds before he pushed me away. “Hebe, you’re drunk.”
I giggled. “No I’m not, you are.”
I pulled at his shirt, lost my balance and fell backwards. I landed on the floor and he fell on top of me.
“You’re so heavy.” I said, groaning.
He got off me, carried me on his back and started to walk forwards. “Let’s go home.” He said. I could see a hint of a smile on his blurry face. I closed my eyes, and fell asleep.
It was already 11 pm. I tried to sleep but I couldn’t. I was too worried. I heard footsteps resounding against the still night. Is Hebe back?
I rushed to the gate and saw Jiro carrying Hebe into the house. Somehow that angered me. I quickly ran to them and put my arms around Hebe and helped her inside.
“What did you do to her?” I asked aggressively.
“Nothing. All she did was drink a few glasses of red wine. Who knew that her alcohol capacity was so low.” He replied. I looked at Hebe. Her face was red.
Hearing her call my name, I could feel my cheeks burning. Luckily it was dark in the room, so Jiro could not see my reaction.
“Anyway, what are you doing up so late?” He asked.
“Uhh… the neighbours’ dog kept barking. Couldn’t sleep.”
“…You don’t have any neighbours.”
“I better bring her back to her room.” I quickly carried Hebe upstairs.
“Goodnight.” Said Jiro, smiling.
I brought Hebe up to her room and lay her on the bed. She looked so peaceful with her eyes closed.
I sat down on the bed, next to her and stared at her sleeping face.
I slowly reached out and touched her cheek. I slowly leant down and pecked her on the cheek.
I quickly looked away. Since when did Aaron Yan kiss girls when they’re asleep? Girls usually throw themselves at me.
I turned away quickly to exit the room.
I saw Jiro standing at the doorway, looking at me. He smiled. But it wasn’t the joking smile he usually had on his face. It was an understanding smile.
Embarrassed, I quickly made my way out of the room and back to my room.
---------------------------------------------
Aaron’s going CRAZY! And Jiro can tell. Cos they’re really good friends.
Jiro and Hebe are just REALLY GOOD FRIENDS. :)
